Why the kitchen is the most demanding room in the house
The kitchen is the only room where the floor is attacked from above and from below at the same time. From above come oil, sauce, vinegar, boiling water and the pans that slip out of your hands; from below comes the mechanical abrasion of chairs dragged across the same spots ten times a day. In no other living space do these two stresses coexist with this intensity.
That is why kitchen tiles are not chosen by the same criteria you would apply to the rest of the house. Tiles that perform well in a living room can disappoint here, at the same level of quality. In a bedroom, appearance is almost the only consideration; in a bathroom, it is water; in a kitchen, chemical and mechanical stress meet, and each asks something different of the surface.
Porcelain tiles solve the hardest part of the problem by their very nature: the material is near-waterproof, with a surface that food liquids cannot penetrate, and that removes the most common worry in this room from the outset. But choosing porcelain is not yet a decision. Within this family, finishes, sizes and technical classes behave very differently, precisely under the conditions a kitchen creates.
The three zones of a kitchen and what each one needs
Treating the kitchen as a single surface is the first methodological mistake when choosing kitchen tiles. There are in fact three surfaces with three distinct stress profiles, and each rewards different properties.
The floor takes the heaviest mechanical load. Chairs are not lifted, they are dragged. Crumbs carried under shoe soles act as an abrasive. A kitchen floor ages faster than the floor of any other room, and it ages in specific places: in front of the sink, under the table, on the route to the fridge.
The working zone, meaning the strip of wall behind the hob and the sink, receives the opposite kind of stress: no load, but airborne cooking grease settling in a thin film, steam, temperature swings and degreasers used frequently. Here the decisive property is not hardness but how easily the dirt comes away.
The rest of the wall surface works under far calmer conditions. Occasional splashes, infrequent cleaning, no abrasion. This is where you have the most freedom, and where it makes sense to concentrate any decorative effort. How much durability a kitchen actually needs
Contradictory advice circulates about the technical classes, often because two different scales get confused with one another. It is worth keeping them apart: the PEI rating measures how well the glaze resists abrasion from foot traffic, while the R rating measures the grip of the surface, in other words how slippery it is. They are independent values: a tile can be highly wear-resistant and still offer little grip.
For a domestic kitchen, PEI 4 is the practical benchmark, covering heavy traffic with a sensible margin over what a household actually produces. On grip, R9 is technically sufficient in a dry interior, but R10 is the more sensible compromise: the kitchen is the one indoor space where you regularly walk on a floor that has just been splashed. Going up to R11 brings no advantage here, because that class is designed for surfaces that are wet continuously, and its more pronounced texture would make daily cleaning harder work. Finish and colour: putting every surface where it performs best
This is the part of the decision with the most room to move: plenty of combinations work in a kitchen, and no effect is ruled out from the start. What differs is how each surface behaves day to day, and knowing that lets you give every surface the position where it performs best.
One point concerns the strip behind the hob: heavily textured finishes, the ones where you can feel the relief under your fingers, take a little more effort to clean there than a smoother surface does. That is something to weigh up product by product, not a criterion that narrows your choice of effect.
Colour follows a similar logic. Very light tones open up the space visually and multiply the light; in a poorly lit kitchen they change how the room reads more than any other single choice. Dark tones add character and visually absorb the clutter of a room that doubles as a work surface. Mid tones — beige, taupe, warm greys, concrete-effect tiles in neutral shades, desaturated stone-look surfaces — are the easiest to live with, because they emphasise neither light nor dark marks, and it is no accident that they are the most requested for this room.
As for finishes, matt and natural surfaces are the dominant choice for kitchen tiles on the floor, for a concrete reason: because they do not reflect light directionally, they give an even result even immediately after mopping. Gloss surfaces come into their own on the wall, where reflected light adds to the brightness of the room.
Kitchen tile sizes: why grout lines matter more here
Size is almost always chosen for aesthetic reasons, but in a kitchen it has a practical consequence that is negligible elsewhere. Every grout line is a channel where cleaning product sits and greasy residue settles: fewer grout lines means proportionally less time spent on the weekly clean.
That is why medium and large sizes have displaced small ones in this room. In porcelain tiles for the kitchen the change of scale is clear: moving from 30x60 cm to 60x60 reduces the number of joints per square metre, while 80x80 or 120x120 reduces them further, with the side effect of a surface the eye reads as continuous. Stone-effect tiles in large format work particularly well in a kitchen, precisely because of this combination of visual calm and tolerance of dirt.
The limit is geometric rather than aesthetic: in a narrow kitchen, or one broken up by units and recesses, a large size forces many cuts, and those cuts collect in the visible positions along the base of the units. In those conditions a 60x60 or a 60x120 laid the right way round gives a cleaner result than a poorly used 120x120.
If you want to keep grout lines to a minimum, check that the tiles are rectified, meaning the edges have been machined to a precise 90 degrees after firing: that is the process that allows 2 mm grout lines. Once laid, the eye stops reading the individual lines and reads the surface as a single plane.
When the kitchen does not end where the kitchen ends
In homes renovated over the past few years the kitchen is rarely a closed room, and when the floor continues into the living area, the requirements described so far travel with it. This is the point where the decision becomes complicated in a way few people expect: you are choosing the living room floor by the standards of the most demanding room in the house.
What changes in practice is the order of the checks. It makes sense to start from what holds up in front of the hob and only then judge how that surface behaves next to the sofa, whereas the instinctive order is the reverse: you choose the floor with the larger space in mind, and the kitchen fits in around it. A floor that convinces in the living area but gives way in front of the hob will show it within months, and it affects the whole continuous surface, not only the square metre where the problem started.

The price of kitchen tiles
The logic of the three zones applies to budget as well. In a kitchen, not every surface calls for the same level of product: the floor and the strip behind the hob are where the stresses concentrate, while the rest of the wall works under far calmer conditions. Planning the budget zone by zone, rather than spreading it evenly across the whole room, is the more effective use of it.
There is also a misunderstanding worth clearing up: the technical requirements of this room do not mark out a price bracket. These are widespread specifications in porcelain tiles today, not premium features, and the technically correct choice for a kitchen is made within a large part of the available range. The approach that holds up best over time is to start from the zones rather than from the sample. Once you have established what the floor needs, what the working strip needs and where you are free to choose, the range narrows on its own, and the aesthetic decision is made inside a perimeter that is already technically sound.
