60x60, 80x80, 90x90 and 120x120 porcelain tiles: what actually changes between the four sizes
Size is the first thing you notice about a floor, and often the last thing anyone assesses with a proper criterion. Among the porcelain tile sizes most in demand for contemporary interiors, four are square — 60x60 cm, 80x80, 90x90 and 120x120 — and they are frequently offered within the same range: same material, same finish, same colour. The product really is the same, and the decision is made elsewhere. From one size to the next, three measurable quantities change: how much grout stays visible, how many tiles are needed to cover a square metre, and how much a single piece weighs. Two go down and one goes up, at different rates: the grout falls away more and more slowly, the weight climbs more and more quickly. Knowing where on that scale the gain is large and where it flattens out is the quickest way to work out which size is worth considering.
The grid changes, not the product
A single range of porcelain stoneware produced in four sizes stays identical in everything that concerns the material: body composition, reference thickness, finish, wear class. What changes is the grid the tiles form on the floor — and therefore how often the surface is interrupted. This is where the most common simplification about large format tiles comes from: the idea that the aesthetic benefit grows in proportion to the side of the tile.
The direction is right, because the result really does improve as the size goes up. What changes is the rate: the benefit follows the reduction in interruptions rather than the length of the side, and that is a curve which flattens as you climb. The clearest gain sits in the first steps; beyond a certain point, each extra centimetre returns less and less visible continuity. Meanwhile the technical difficulty runs the other way: weight grows with the square of the side, the diagonal that has to fit through a doorway grows linearly, and the flatness tolerance demanded of the subfloor tightens. How much grout disappears at each step up
Everyone says large tiles reduce grout lines, but almost nobody measures it. It can be calculated: in a regular grid layout, the linear metres of grout contained in one square metre come to roughly two metres divided by the side of the tile. Applied to the four tile sizes, the arithmetic gives figures worth reading in sequence.
A floor in 60x60 porcelain tiles contains around 3,33 metres of grout per m². With 80x80 that drops to 2,50, with 90x90 to 2,22, with 120x120 to 1,67. In other words: going from 60x60 to 80x80 removes a quarter of the visible lines, and going from 90x90 to 120x120 removes another quarter.
The step in between is the instructive one. Between 80x80 and 90x90 the grout is reduced by only about eleven per cent: ten centimetres more per side, and almost no perceptible difference on the finished surface. The two sizes that sit close together in a price list sit just as close together once laid, while the steps that count are the first and the last.
The reduction in lines has a consequence that goes beyond geometry: fewer interruptions mean more continuous surface for the pattern of the material to unfold across without being cut. 60x60 and 80x80: the step that shows most and costs least
60x60 is the reference size for porcelain tiles in European interiors, and it is also the most forgiving: it suits rooms of varying dimensions, it can be handled with one hand, and it leaves room for correction during installation. With 80x80 the relationship between the two curves is at its most favourable. It removes a quarter of the grout compared with 60x60 — the sharpest difference on the whole scale — without altering the working conditions in any way. A single tile weighs around 14 kg against roughly 8 kg for 60x60: still a weight one person can manage. The diagonal measures a little over 113 cm, so it passes through any doorway and fits the cutting length of an ordinary tile cutter. Put another way, 80x80 opens the band in which the aesthetic gain is complete and the technical cost is still nil — a band that includes the next size up as well.
90x90: the same balanced band, with more scale
90x90 and 80x80 belong to the same band, and the figures confirm it: between the two, grout changes little and the laid surface reads almost identically. What 90x90 adds is ten centimetres per side, which in a wide room means one full row of tiles fewer and a grid that divides the dimensions differently. Weight rises to around 18 kg and the diagonal to about 127 cm: values that stay within the scope of an ordinary job, with an installation that calls for no tools beyond the usual ones.
Compared with 80x80 it asks for a little more attention to the subfloor, because across a ninety-centimetre side an unevenness that would have gone unnoticed under a 60x60 becomes noticeable underfoot. 120x120: this is where the job changes, not just the look
With 120x120 the scale does not continue; it breaks and starts again under different rules. One square metre of floor is covered by less than a single whole tile, and that alone changes the nature of the work: one piece weighs around 31 kg in standard thickness, and more in thicker versions. The diagonal exceeds 169 cm, so handling and storage call for room to manoeuvre that a flat renovation does not always allow.
The installation conditions change as well. Two people are needed to place the tile, along with a flatness tolerance of the subfloor in the order of two millimetres under a two-metre straightedge, adhesive applied to both surfaces, and levelling systems to align the edges. None of these requirements is insurmountable, but together they move the work to a different level of precision. What each size asks of the material
Choosing a larger size also places a demand on the product and on the subfloor. Three characteristics gain weight along the scale.
The first is rectification. A rectified tile has edges machined to precisely ninety degrees, which allows grout joints of two millimetres instead of the three or four needed with natural edges. On 60x60 the difference is noticeable; on 120x120 it is decisive, because a wider joint would undo the continuity the large size was chosen for. Installation with no grout at all is not permitted in any case: the relevant standard always requires a minimum joint, which absorbs movement in the substrate.
The second is the flatness of the surface being tiled. The longer the side, the less the tile can follow the irregularities of the screed: a defect that spreads over a small area under a 60x60 shows up under a 120x120 as a raised edge running more than a metre.
The third is thickness, which follows no fixed rule as the size increases: sometimes it stays the same as on standard sizes, sometimes it decreases, as with thin tiles. How to approach the choice
The order of the criteria matters more than the criteria themselves. The first is geometric and concerns the real dimensions of the room: how many whole tiles fit along the short side and what is left to cut at the perimeter. The second concerns how much continuity weighs in the project. On a wide surface seen in one piece — an open-plan living area, a floor that carries on without thresholds — the reduction in lines is the first thing you notice, and it is worth going up a size. On fragmented surfaces, or surfaces largely covered by furniture, the advantage is lost: the floor is never read all at once, and nobody sees the extra grout line.
The third concerns the condition of the existing subfloor. A new screed sets no limits; an old floor being worked over without demolition sets nearly all of them, and in that case staying with the intermediate sizes is a technical decision before it is an economic one.
