How to choose the right porcelain tile size for every room
In most projects the size is decided last, after the effect and after the colour, as though it were a finishing touch. That is the wrong order. With the same material and the same shade, size is the variable that changes how a room reads more than any other: it determines how many lines cross the floor, where the cuts fall, and how far the eye reads the surface as continuous or as a grid.
Choosing tile sizes room by room does not mean applying a single rule to the whole house. It means starting from the actual measurements of each space and from the job that space has to do. Tile size follows the measurements, not the idea of the room
The criterion that decides almost everything is simple, and almost nobody states it: how many whole tiles fit across the shorter wall, and what is left to cut at the perimeter.
Take the clear measurement of the shorter side and divide it by the tile edge plus the grout joint. The decimal part of the result is the cut border, the strip of cut tiles that runs along the wall. If that strip drops below roughly a third of a tile, the eye does not read it as a decision: it reads it as a mistake. A ten-centimetre sliver along an entire wall spoils a well-laid floor far more than a larger size would improve it.
A concrete example. A bathroom 2,40 m wide takes four whole rows of 60 cm with nothing to cut: the result is clean whatever effect you choose. The same bathroom in 120 cm takes two whole rows, and reads just as calmly. A room 2,70 m wide leaves, with that same 60 cm tile, a 30 cm strip that is still perfectly legible. The problem appears at 2,55 m: four rows and a sliver. In that case you drop down a size, or you shift the starting line so the cut is shared between two opposite walls instead of building up along one.
The calculation works cleanly with rectified porcelain, meaning tiles with edges trimmed to exactly ninety degrees, which allow grout joints of just a few millimetres. With non-rectified edges the joint is wider and has to be counted in, because over ten rows it adds up to around ten centimetres. Bathroom: the constraint is not space, it is the fall
In the bathroom, habit weighs more heavily than anywhere else: the idea that a small room calls for small tiles is still widespread. It is not unfounded, but it needs checking case by case, because in most bathrooms a medium or larger size works better than you would expect. The reason is technical: more grout joints mean more lines, and more lines mean a surface the eye breaks up instead of reading as a whole. The cut border calculation still has the last word.
The genuinely decisive constraint in a bathroom, though, lies elsewhere, and it is a functional one. Where there is a floor drain or a walk-in shower, the surface has to fall towards the outlet, and a rigid large format tile cannot follow a fall in two directions. In the shower area you therefore need a smaller size, or a tile cut to measure with the cut worked out by the tiler. Outside that area the choice opens up again, and medium to large sizes work well even in a few square metres, provided the dimensions take them without forced cuts.
Kitchen and living area: size carries the continuity
In almost every contemporary home the kitchen and the living area open into one another, when they are not a single room. The practical consequence is that size is not chosen on the kitchen but on the larger of the two areas: a size judged on the few square metres of the cooking zone, extended into the living room, produces a tight grid exactly where the floor needs to breathe.
There is a practical reason as well. The cooking zone is the part of the floor that gets dirty most often and most stubbornly, and the grout joint is where the dirt stays. Fewer joints mean fewer places to go back over. Large format tiles are also the natural ground for porcelain surfaces in a solid colour with an even grain, which is why concrete-effect tiles in living areas are almost always asked for in big dimensions: what counts there is the continuity of the surface, not the pattern of the individual tile.
Bedroom: size follows the light
In a bedroom foot traffic is light and the technical demands drop, so size goes back to being a question of proportion and light. Bedrooms are often rectangular, and a rectangular tile laid with its long edge perpendicular to the window stretches the sense of space towards the light source; laid parallel, it widens it.
That is why wood-look planks, in the long 20x120 or 30x120 cm sizes, work particularly well in this room: the laying direction becomes a design tool, and a staggered layout hides the small irregularities of a room that is rarely perfectly square.
Hallways and entrances: where the wrong size shows immediately
The hallway is the least forgiving space in the house. Its width is almost always between one metre and one metre forty, and across a dimension that narrow any error in the grid becomes visible along the whole length of the passage. A 120 cm tile in a hallway 110 cm wide means cutting every single piece: the floor turns into a run of incomplete pieces.
Here it pays to choose a size whose edge divides the actual width cleanly, even at the cost of giving up the large format used through the rest of the house. The entrance adds a constraint of its own: it is the point where water, grit and dirt come in, and the grout joints are the first thing to suffer. Rooms out of square: when the calculation is not enough
Counting rows assumes parallel walls. In many homes, especially those a few decades old, they are not: two or three centimetres of difference between one end of a wall and the other are normal. A room that is out of square does not hide that flaw under the floor, it puts it on show, because the grout joint is a straight line and the wall is not. The cut along the perimeter grows steadily narrower, and the eye registers it.
The larger the size, the sooner the flaw appears: there are few lines, and each one carries more weight. On large squares the effect shows more than on rectangular sizes, which is one of the reasons the 90x90 size calls for checking the real measurements before ordering. Where walls are noticeably irregular, a rectangular tile in a staggered layout spreads the discrepancy across several rows and makes it less legible; alternatively you concentrate it on the least visible side, usually the one taken up by fitted furniture.
